As the New Year gets underway, our voyage aboard the Odyssey begins with a journey from Papeete for a day and a half visiting Fakarava, French Polynesia. The ship sets sail under brilliant tropical skies, the air warm and inviting at around 82°F, creating the perfect backdrop for the start of our adventure. We relax on deck and take in expansive views of the South Pacific, letting the gentle rhythm of the ocean set a tranquil pace for the days ahead.

While we cruise through these pristine waters, our captain and crew remain attentive to the strong trade winds that may bring moments of brisk sailing and occasional choppy seas. Despite the possibility of passing showers and gusty breezes, the atmosphere remains vibrant and full of anticipation. Onboard activities and gatherings foster a sense of camaraderie, and as we approach the coral-rich paradise of Fakarava, the promise of excellent snorkeling and wildlife sightings—like sharks, turtles, and playful dolphins—heightens the excitement. The blend of open sea adventure and the comforts of the Odyssey make these opening days of the year truly unforgettable.

Fakarava, a stunning coral atoll located in French Polynesia’s Tuamotu Archipelago northeast of Tahiti, stands out as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve celebrated for its remarkable biodiversity, pristine marine habitats, and commitment to sustainable practices. With a population of just 800-850 residents—primarily Polynesians and French—life here revolves around the vast lagoon, which ranks as the second largest in French Polynesia. The local industries, such as pearl farming and copra (coconut) production, are intricately tied to the atoll’s natural resources. The tropical climate brings warm, humid conditions year-round, and a distinct wet season from November to April envelops the islands in lush vegetation and vibrant life.

Fakarava’s breathtaking underwater world is a magnet for divers worldwide, especially the iconic South Pass (Tetamanu), renowned for its “wall of sharks” where hundreds of grey reef sharks gather, forming a globally significant shark sanctuary. The protected passes and nearby atolls with closed lagoons serve as crucial nurseries for fish and unique habitats for rare birds and crustaceans, helping to maintain the area’s ecological balance. The atoll’s coral reefs teem with rays, turtles, and endemic species like the hunting kingfisher, making every dive an encounter with rare and colorful marine life.

Above water, Fakarava’s charm is reflected in its quaint villages—Rotoava and Tetamanu—where old coral churches and a historic cemetery speak to its past as a regional capital. One of the island’s more unusual attractions is the “Jacques Chirac Road,” a scenic 9.3-mile paved route built for a former French president, now offering picturesque views of this Polynesian paradise. Traditional festivities, such as spear-throwing events, reveal the community’s deep connection to its cultural heritage.

As a protected biosphere reserve, Fakarava and its surrounding atolls safeguard rare flora and fauna, emphasizing sustainable development and conservation. Biking or quad biking across coconut groves reveals the lush, untouched landscapes of the atoll, while tours of pearl farms provide a window into the creation of the famous Tahitian black pearls. Throughout the island, the balance between tourism and preservation ensures this “Island of Dreams” remains both pristine and vibrant. Life in Fakarava is peaceful, marked by limited development and a strong focus on keeping natural beauty and traditions alive, making it a truly authentic Polynesian escape.

Fakarava’s designation as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve underscores its dedication to environmental preservation and responsible tourism. Whether savoring fresh local cuisine, snacking with your feet in the water just feet from a colony of sleeper sharks, relaxing on secluded shores, or engaging in exhilarating underwater adventures, Fakarava invites you to unplug, recharge, and fully immerse yourself in its unspoiled environment.

Fakarava is the embodiment of tranquility, a place where everything unnecessary seems to fall away, leaving only the essentials: shimmering turquoise water, endless sky, and soft, powdery sand. The atmosphere encourages a meditative state, inviting you to let go of everyday stresses and embrace a profound sense of peace. With limited cell service and few distractions, it's an ideal setting to disconnect from the digital world and reconnect with both nature and yourself. This remote atoll feels like a hidden sanctuary, untouched by the rush of modern life. Instead of crowded streets, gentle cycling along quiet paths and the relaxed island pace allow you to truly slow down and savor each moment.

The vast, pristine lagoons stretch out before you, reinforcing the sensation that you are standing on the very edge of the world. Here, vibrant marine life flourishes: sharks glide through crystal-clear waters, dolphins leap playfully, and colorful fish and graceful mantas inhabit thriving coral reefs. The small, peaceful villages built from coral further enhance the atoll’s charm, adding to the sense of simplicity and authenticity. Fakarava is not just a visual wonder; it is a soulful experience, where the magic lies in its raw and elemental beauty. Islanders greet you warmly with "Ia Ora na," their kindness adding to the welcoming spirit that fills the air.

The afternoon sun gleamed brilliantly as I settled in for lunch aboard the Odyssey, anchored peacefully in Fakarava, French Polynesia. Unlike my usual habit of sitting by the window, where I can admire the endless expanse of the ocean and gaze at the ever-changing sky, today I found myself at a secluded table near the entrance to the galley. Perhaps it was the slight sniffles, or maybe the desire for a quieter moment, but the new vantage point offered its own unique charm. To my left, wide windows still revealed a breathtaking view: the vibrant blues of the sky, dotted with fluffy clouds, the sparkling turquoise of the water, and the inviting silhouette of Fakarava in the distance.

The day outside was dazzling, overflowing with sunlight that made every color more vivid. The sky showcased a spectacular palette, shifting softly from pale blue to deep periwinkle, as wisps of white clouds drifted lazily before forming a gentle band above Fakarava. The ocean below glinted with various shades of turquoise, while lower clouds began to blush with pinkish lavender hues, hinting at a dreamy glow over the landscape.

Yet, even as the scenery outside called to me, I found myself equally captivated by the graceful choreography unfolding within the dining room. Staff members moved seamlessly in and out of the galley, carrying trays laden with fresh, vibrant dishes, continuously replenishing the buffet and ensuring all our needs were met. Their dance was one of both purpose and joy—a swift, elegant rhythm of service, marked by friendly smiles and gentle nods. The experience felt less like a simple meal and more like witnessing an orchestrated performance, each person playing a vital role in creating a welcoming, harmonious environment. This lunchtime, I savored not only the delicious food but also the spirit of community and gratitude that filled the room, making the moment truly memorable.

As the Odyssey prepares to set sail, leaving Fakarava behind, we depart humbled by the grandeur and serenity of nature. The experience leaves an imprint, reminding us to appreciate the simplest joys and the quiet magnificence of untouched places. Rangiroa awaits, but part of us remains spellbound by the Zen-like peace and elemental purity of Fakarava.

As a remote atoll, Fakarava offers incredibly dark skies, making it an ideal location to see the bright Wolf Moon—January’s Full Moon, known for its brilliance and promising a spectacular sight as it rises in the east and moves gracefully across the sky. The tranquility of the night sky here is truly unforgettable, inviting reflection and awe beneath the lunar glow. Another event as we sail is setting our clocks ahead 30 minutes, marking the beginning of a new chapter as we journey onward.
