Set amongst the verdant
mature trees of Jalan Putri Hijau, the Marriott Cafe acts as a stage set
for the dynamic primitive artworks of the local Batak people.
Originating from the shores of majestic Lake Toba, these descendants of
the first Austronesians, once known as the Proto-Malay people, migrated
from somewhere in Southern China or Taiwan as far back as 6,000 years
ago. |
HORAS !
Marriott Cafe + Marriott Gourmet
The entire life of the Batak is saturated
by magic-religious beliefs - a dynamic, animistic, spiritual labyrinth
that only datu priests had the pure knowledge to navigate.
G.L. Tichelman, 1941

The 6,000 sq ft space
faces onto Jalan Putri Hijau with it's massive trees adding lush
greenery to the space that forms Marriott Gourmet. LED chandeliers that
resemble frozen raindrops hovering in space hang from the white ceiling
above each round marble topped table.
Lush wool carpets with
a bamboo pattern in lime green soften the cavernous space.
JW Marriott is a non smoking hotel. But
there are zones available, such as the alfresco garden at Marriott Cafe,
protected from rain by a frosted glass ceiling and surrounded by lush
Bamboo. Soft
flowing 'Rain chandeliers' are suspended over the dining tables along
the alfresco window wall. Made from 25 kilometers of Japanese
fiber-optic tubing and electronically controlled for very slow color
changing effects. |
 |

Columns and lighting details have been
created from molded gloss-white fiberglass so that the LED lighting
placed throughout the space reflects in fresh true colors. The many
layers of glass panels and the tint of the green carpet give the space a
freshness not unlike that of crisp greens of a fresh Caesar salad, with
some areas being punctuated with bright red abstracted paintings that
are enlarged details of the Rafflesia bloom, found in the jungles
nearby.
The three theatre cooking zones include
counters for Coffee + desserts, Asian cooking, and Western cooking. A
semi-private Chef's table is situated next door to the Western kitchen.
Batak carved staffs form a privacy wall onto the main dining room, while
a glass pass-thru allows the chef to converse with the patrons in the 12
seater room. Walls are upholstered in silver velour fabric to soften the
room acoustically. |

Massive fiberglass
'pod' lamps mounted to the ceiling, can change colors to create different
moods throughout the day, such as at the Sushi counter. The giant abstract Rafflesia bloom punctuates the space with bright color.

The dessert counter features a chocolate fountain and
hundreds of glass jars filled with sweets. The use of daylight LED
spotlights gives the counter a fresh clean coloration that brings out
the vibrancy of the candies and fruits.

have fresh seasonal flora on display. These images were taken at
