Howard Chandler Christy was
born in 1873 [died 1952]. Between 1905 and the beginning of the war,
Christy was one of the most popular artists in America. Throughout the
1920's, when he wasn't traveling, he lived in New York City and had his
studio at the Hotel des Artistes.
Christy originated the Christy Girl, who was the sporty American feminine
ideal after the Gibson Girl of the previous generation. [Later came the
Vargas Girl of the 1950's, by the Peruvian/American illustrator Alberto
Vargas]. Christy's popular, lively pin-up nudes showed that the Christy
Girl was indeed, approachable.
The Parrot Girl, painted some time after 1934, has been reproduced for
Cafe Society, Singapore by Californian artist Willy Baet. The massive teak
frame designed by Poole Associates in an eclectic Palladian - Victorian
style was hand crafted by artisans in central Java.
